The administration says that vaccine doses are federal property.
The White House Vaccine Task Force destroyed thousands of vaccine doses when a Californian group attempted to donate them to Mexico, which currently has a vaccination rate of 40%. This is the most recent event in a string of actions taken by the federal government to forbid localized donations to other countries, saying that because vaccines are technically federal property local groups are unable to donate them directly.
Though the federal policy frustrates local healthcare providers who would like a more direct means to donate vaccines to the world, a U.S. official stated how much of an undertaking it would be to monitor all those individual transactions. “Given chain-of-custody considerations, moving doses out from more than 80,000 providers would involve significant legal and logistical challenges.”
